About us

Prospect is the UK’s outstanding monthly current affairs title—a home for fine writing, robust debate and considered reflection on the biggest issues of our time. Edited by Alan Rusbridger, it is published in print ten times a year—including a bumper issue in both the winter and the summer—and now boasts a lively website, app and suite of newsletters with timely contributions from Prospect’s family of world-class writers. The Prospect Podcast is released each Wednesday; Media Confidential, a landmark new podcast offering from Rusbridger and former Financial Times editor Lionel Barber, comes out each Thursday and unpacks the latest developments in the hugely important media world.

Prospect was launched in 1995 by David Goodhart, an ex-FT journalist who became the magazine’s first editor, Derek Coombs, a former Conservative MP who would become its founding chairman, and Charles Seaford, Prospect’s first publisher. Since then the magazine has grown and evolved—but the words of its first editorial still capture its essence: “Standing back from the scrum, Prospect will offer a different rhythm, an alternative journalistic ‘time,’ and a home for those writers who can see further than the rest of us.” Successive editors—Bronwen Maddox, Tom Clark and, now, former Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger—have sought to deliver on that ambition during Prospect’s journey to becoming the leading digital-first publisher it is today.

Prospect has always been politically independent, with no party-political affiliation or agenda. It is owned and supported by the Resolution Group as part of its not-for-profit, public interest activities. We run an extensive events programme at our auditorium in Westminster and host an annual summer party in our garden overlooking St James’s Park.
